5 Qualities Everyone at Summer Day Camps Should Have

Kids Tug Of War C

It’s almost summer, and you or your child are considering going to a summer day camp. You’ve never been, though, and you want to know if it is for you. No matter the camp you are thinking of attending, whether art, sport, general, or any other type, there are certain qualities that will make you more able to handle a summer camp.

Here are five qualities that are especially helpful for anyone going to a summer day camp.

  1. Love of Adventure

When you go to summer camp, there are a lot of things you might do depending on the nature of the camp. Examples include

  • Horseback riding,
  • Kayaking,
  • Hiking,
  • Sports,
  • Swimming, and
  • Rock climbing.

With all of the cool activities available, it is a good idea to go to camp with a highly-tuned love of adventure. From meeting new people to going to a new place to doing any of the things listed above, you are bound to try new things.

In order to enjoy all of this new knowledge, all you have to do is love adventure whether it is a big adventure or a small one.

  1. Desire to Make Friends

There is one way that almost all summer day camps are going to be the same: there will be more than one camper there. Camps tend to group students of a similar age together, and, when the camp has a theme such as theatre camp, it is filled with students who share the same interests.

What does this mean? Well, it means there is a really good chance that you will make a lot of friends at summer camp. Some people go to the same camp every summer and forge relationships with people that last a lifetime. Sometimes people even meet their future husbands or wives at camp. There are great opportunities all around you.

While you might not be one of the ones to meet a lifelong friend or a future spouse, it is still very likely that you will make some friends while you are there. So, if you really want to enjoy your summer day camp, you should probably have the desire to make friends when you go.

  1. A Willingness to Learn New Things

This is similar to needing a love of adventure, but it applies in even the non-adventurous situations. No matter the camp you select, you are going to be learning something while you are there.

  • At a sports camp, you are going to learn new skills and techniques to make you a better player.
  • At an arts camp, you are going to learn how to perfectly hone your craft, whether it be singing, acting, painting, or anything else you might be trying to learn.
  • At an equestrian camp, you will learn various skills relating to horse riding.

You get the picture. Even at a general camp, you will be learning, and there it is even more likely to be something you had never before considered trying. You might learn how to

  • Create many different arts and crafts,
  • Swim,
  • Tie a rope,
  • Start a camp fire, or
  • Tell a ghost story.

Even if it was something you never thought you would want to do, when you go to summer camp, you should go with the idea that you are going to try new things and love it.

  1. A Positive Attitude

No matter what you do in life, you can find something to complain about. If you stay at home, you might complain that you are bored. If you get a summer job, you might complain that you have to work during your time off. If you are the type of person who likes to find the worst in things, you will certainly be able to find things that you don’t like at summer camp – maybe yours has mosquitos or does outdoor activities when it’s just so hot.

When you go to camp, you should go with a positive attitude. Just like how if you look for the bad you will find it, if you look for the good you will find that too. If you stay at home, you might be able to catch up on your TV watching or reading time. If you work, you get to make a whole lot of money. And if you go to camp, you will be making life long memories and learning skills that will help you succeed in life.

One of the best qualities you can bring to summer day camp is a positive attitude. You need this no matter the type of camp you are attending or how long it lasts. It is the single most important item on your packing list, and if you forget it, you can almost guarantee yourself that you will not have a good time. So make sure you bring a good attitude if you want to have a successful experience at summer day camp.

  1. The Ability to Have Fun

The next thing you need to have in order to enjoy your summer day camp is the ability to have fun. Seems like an obvious one, but you would be surprised. A lot of kids go to camp expecting it to be boring and uneventful. And guess what? They were right in regards to themselves.

When you don’t want to have fun, you won’t. That’s just science. However, the opposite is also true. If you go to camp planning on having fun, you will definitely have a whole lot of it. So if you want to have a great summer camp experience, make sure you have the ability to have a fun time.

Summer day camps are great places to spend your summer, and no matter what your interest, you can probably find a summer camp that is designed around that interest. Summer day camps can be fun for everyone as long as you have the five qualities listed above.
