Co- Director's Bio
Kati Cavanagh recently finished her third season as assistant coach at Western Connecticut State University. In her first season the team doubled the number of wins from the previous season. In her second season they doubled the number of wins once again, which was good for the most wins in program history. The eight wins qualified them for the LEC tournament for the first time ever. This past season West Conn set a new record for wins in a season, and also qualified them for the LEC tournament for the second year in a row.
Cavanagh graduated from UConn in 2006 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. She spent five seasons playing for UConn coach Nancy Stevens and collected four Big East regular season championships and three Big East Tournament titles. During her senior season in 2005, Cavanagh was one of the leading scorers in the Big East Conference.
Melissa Leyland has wrapped up her first season as goalkeeper coach at Western Connecticut State University. Before coming to West Conn, Leyland was the head coach for The Park School in Baltimore, MD. Leyland has worked a number of youth camps in her career including the University of Maryland field hockey camp.
Leyland played collegiately at Goucher College of the Capital Athletic Conference from 2001-2004. She finished second in school history in career saves and was named all-conference first team in her senior season.
Site Director's Bio
Dani McDonnell, WSCU Head Field Hockey Coach will join our camp staff as the site director and guest teach one session during camp. Dani is in her seventh season as Head Coach of the Western Connecticut State University field hockey program.
Prior to taking the helm at WCSU, Coach McDonnell was the Assistant Coach of Fairfield University. Dani is very active in teh USFHA Futures Programs and is the co-founder of Connecticut Revolution, a club team in southwestern Connecticut for U14, U16 and U19 aged players.
The Pennsylvania native earned a field hockey scholarship to St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA and was a four-year starter at center midfield. McDonnell was a co-captain and an All Atlantic-10 and Mid-East Regional All-American selection her junior and senior seasons. She was recognized as the 1993 A-10 Defensive Player of the Year.Her senior year, she led her school to an Atlantic 10 Championship, in which she set a conference tourney record with five assists in one game.In addition, she was named team MVP and the team finished 16th in the nation in NCAA Division I. She was honored in 2001 by the A-10 for her contribution to its success for the 25th Anniversary of the Conference.
